Bangladesh Bank withdraws new dress code notice

Staff Correspondent

Bangladesh Bank has withdrawn a recently issued dress code notice for its employees following widespread criticism and media coverage.

Arif Hossain Khan, spokesperson and Executive Director, said no policy decision was taken in this regard and no circular was issued.

“When the internal matter came to the notice of the governor, who is currently abroad, through media reports he expressed his anger and then the notice was withdrawn as per his instruction,” he added.

He said the idea came during departmental discussions where it was suggested that employees be advised to wear professional attire in keeping with social norms.

The now-withdrawn notice issued on July 21 by the central bank’s Human Resources Department-2, had prohibited women from wearing short-sleeved or short-length dresses and leggings.

The notice set specific dress requirements for both male and female employees and warned that failure to comply would be treated as a disciplinary offense.
