The Economic Relations Division (ERD) has signed a grant agreement worth $170,000 with UNESCO for the 'Health Promoting School’ (HPS) Programme.
This transformative initiative, led by the Ministry of Education, aims to integrate health promotion into the education system, enhancing the physical, mental, and social well-being of the students.
The agreement was signed by Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary of ERD, and Susan Vize, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh, at a ceremony held at the ERD office recently, said an ERD press release today.
Distinguished guests including senior representatives from ERD's UN Wing, the Ministry of Education, and related stakeholders were present at the programme. The HPS Programme is part of a global UNESCO initiative supporting school health systems.
Bangladesh and Honduras are priority countries for implementation in 2024. Building on UNESCO's work in 21 member states, the program will strengthen school health frameworks, address issues like bullying, cyber bullying, promote inclusive education and safe learning environments.
This initiative is aligned with the nation's efforts toward achieving SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education).
By engaging stakeholders such as the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE), National Academy for Educational Management (NAEM), National Curriculum and Textbook Hoard (NCTB) and others will ensure the program in a comprehensive and inclusive approach.
UNESCO will provide both financial and technical support, leveraging its global expertise to deliver measurable outcomes in school health policies and practices.
The HPS Programme emphasizes on addressing mental health challenges, combating violence and discrimination in schools, and fostering positive use of technology.
