Awareness meeting held to eradicate rabies in Boalkhali

An awareness meeting has been held in Boalkhali on the occasion of the implementation of the dog vaccination program to eradicate the deadly disease rabies.
From January 14 to 18, all dogs kept at home and on the streets will be vaccinated against rabies in every union and municipality of the upazila.
The meeting was held at the auditorium of the Boalkhali Upazila Health Complex at 11.30 am on Sunday.
The meeting was chaired by Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. jafrin Jahed Jiti, Boalkhali Upazila Assistant Commissioner and Municipal Administrator Kaniz Fatima was the chief guest, Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Rumon Talukder, OC Mahfuz Rahman, Upazila Primary Education Officer Ranjan Bhattacharya, Abdur Kabir, Md. Kawsar Ahmed MDV, Supervisor, all in-charges of 9 unions and municipalities of the upazila, journalists and people from different classes and professions participated in the meeting.
Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Jafrin Jahed Jiti said, rabies is a dangerous and deadly disease, with a mortality rate of 100 percent. Every year, about 59 thousand people die from rabies in the world. Every year, about 4 to 5 lakh people in Bangladesh are bitten or scratched by dogs, cats, foxes, badgers and monkeys, most of whom are children. She further said that considering the seriousness of rabies, the government has taken various activities to prevent and eradicate this disease.
In her speech as the chief guest, Kaniz Fatima said, rabies is a 100% preventable disease. But due to lack of awareness, people are still being affected by it. On the one hand, animal safety will be ensured by vaccinating stray dogs, and on the other hand, people will also be risk-free. Active participation of the general public along with the administration is very important to make Boalkhali rabies-free.
