Arrested as suspect in Sagar-Runi case : No evidence of guilty found even after 13 years, Enamul's family wants his release

"If my son Enamul was guilty, we wanted him to be tried. But even after 13 and a half years, no evidence of his crime was found. My son and our family were destroyed just because of suspicion. Now let him be released. Let him be freed from the slander of killing Sagar-Runi. Let our family be given some peace."
Thus, in a tearful voice, Fatema Begum, the mother of guard Enamul Ahmed alias Humayun Kabir, who has been in prison for 13 and a half years in the Sagar-Runi murder case, demanded the release of her son.
Enamul Ahmed was arrested as a suspect in the Sagar-Runi murder case. A recent investigation report by the Dhaka Metro North Division of the PBI has mentioned that he is currently suffering from mental imbalance due to his long imprisonment. The report said that no evidence has been found so far of Enamul Ahmed's involvement in the Sagar-Runi murder.
Enamul Haque alias Humayun Kabir is the son of the deceased Maqbul Ali alias Kala Mia of Purba-Dakshinbhag village of Dakshinbhag Dakshin Union of Barolekha upazila of Moulvibazar district. Enamul was working as a security guard at building number 58/A/2 in West Rajabazar in the capital at the time of the Sagar-Runi murder. The bodies of journalists Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi were recovered from that house on the night of February 11, 2012. After the murder, RAB arrested Enamul as a suspect. Fatema Begum said, 'We learned from the news on TV that the PBI investigation report mentioned that there was no evidence of a crime against Enamul. Now let him be released. Let him be compensated for ruining my son's life.'
Fatema Begum broke down in tears while talking about that time in the past. She said that before Enamul was arrested, her husband Kala Mia was also taken away by the RAB. He went missing on September 27, 2012, on his way to the shop. Fatema claimed that Kala Mia was blindfolded and taken to an unknown place. They contacted various places including the police station and police station in search of her husband. They also spent money according to their means. Later, one day, the family received a call from Kala Mia's mobile phone. There, she wanted to know about Enamul. About 21 days after the news of her disappearance was published in various media, she was left with Bhairab. According to Fatema, Kala Mia told her home that she had been tortured and given electric shocks there. She also told her family that if she spoke to anyone about this, she would be taken away again. Fatema said that after that incident, her husband could not return to normal life.
He had to undergo treatment for various physical and mental problems. The family spent a huge amount of money on treatment. Kala Mia died about six-seven months ago. Enamul's elder brother Shahin Ahmed said that after his brother's arrest, their family was in financial crisis. At the same time, they could not handle the case regularly due to security concerns. They were also lagging behind in handling cases due to the fear of being in danger. Enamul's mental condition has deteriorated due to being in prison for a long time. He demanded that he be released if there is no evidence against him.
The PBI report said that Enamul Ahmed was interrogated again on April 22nd at Kashimpur Central Jail after the court order. At that time, he could not give specific answers to any questions. He could not remember many things and was giving random answers. For these reasons, the investigation officer found him mentally unbalanced. The report, citing the prison authorities, said that Enamul is currently suffering from mental imbalance due to being in prison for a long time. He is being kept in a ward separate from the general prisoners and is being given primary treatment. The report also mentions that he needs urgent medical attention.
