Staff Correspondent

The law enforcers picked up around 20 protesters from Dhanmondi and ECB Chattar area of Mirpur-10 when they were staging demonstrations this noon.

The quota reform agitators once again took to the streets in different parts of the capital, Dhaka, protesting the Detective Branch’s reported pressure on the six coordinators to withdraw all programmes.

Sensing danger, the authorities beefed up security measures at various strategic points in and around the capital by deploying additional members of law enforcers.

On Sunday night, the quota reform organisers announced via a video message that they were withdrawing all programmes relating to the quota reform. However, rumors spread that the organisers were being forced to make the announcement.

In response to the announcement, other quota reform organisers planned demonstrations at eight locations - Science Lab, North South University, Press Club, BNS Center in Uttara, Mirpur-10, ECB Chattar in Mirpur, Rampura, and Mohakhali - protesting the alleged pressure of the DB.

Police forces were deployed in these areas in the morning and helicopter patrols by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were also noticed.

Additionally, army personnel were seen patrolling various roads in the capital to avoid any untoward incident.

While talking to the reporter, Munsi Sabbir, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station, said 10 people were picked up from Mirpur-10 intersection during their attempt to stage a demonstration.

Besides, 10 protesters were also picked up from Dhanmondi area when they were attempting to hold a rally, said Md Refatul Islam, assistant commissioner of the New Market Zone.
