A Dhaka court has granted bail to Arif Sohel, a student of Jahangirnagar University (JU) and a coordinator of the Quota Reform Movement, in a case filed over vandalising and setting Setu Bhaban on fire on July 18.
Besides, the court sent former BRAC University lecturer Asif Mahtab Utsha to jail after his six-day remand in the case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shanto Islam Mallik passed the order on Saturday, following a hearing.
Earlier in the day, the Detective Branch of police (DB) and the investigating officer of the case Inspector Abu Sayeed Mia produced Arif Sohel and Asif Mahtab before the court after a six-day remand. He filed a plea to keep them in custody until the investigation is completed.
Mahtab's lawyer, Zainul Abedin Mejbah, applied for bail, which was opposed by the state. After hearing both sides, the court granted bail to Arif Sohel and rejecting the bail petition ordered Mahtab to be sent to jail.
Earlier, on Monday (July 29), Sohel and Mahtab were produced before the court and the investigating officer had sought a 10-day remand for a thorough investigation.
After reviewing both sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mainul Islam denied bail and granted a six-day remand.
