A court has granted a three-day remand for former Law Minister Anisul Huq and a four-day remand for former Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam in separate criminal cases linked to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Police presented them before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The police sought a five-day remand for Anisul Huq in connection with an attempted murder case filed at Mohammadpur Police Station.

Besides, the investigation officer, Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Nurul Islam, requested a 10-day remand for Atiqul Islam regarding the murder case filed at Badda Police Station.

Public Prosecutor of Dhaka Metropolitan, Omar Faruq Faruqui, argued in favour of granting the remands. On the other hand, defence lawyers appealed for the cancellation of the remands and sought bail for the accused.

After hearing both sides, Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam rejected the bail petitions and approved the remands.

According to the case details, on July 19, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, rickshaw-van driver Insan Ali was passing through the Mohammadpur Bus Stand area when he was injured by gunfire allegedly fired by attackers at the order of the accused. He was then hospitalised.

On November 13, his mother filed an attempted murder case at Mohammadpur Police Station, naming 266 people as accused.

The allegations against Atiqul Islam state that during the same movement on July 19, indiscriminate gunfire near Fuji Tower on Pragati Sarani in Badda left Sumon Shikdar dead.

His mother, Masuma Begum, later filed a murder case, accusing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 179 others.
