AL leader Hanif’s house vandalised after pitched battles in Kushtia

Anti-government protesters have vandalised the house of Mahbubul Alam Hanif, joint general secretary of the ruling Awami League and lawmaker from Kushtia sadar, venting their anger after daylong clashes with police in different parts of Kushtia town.
However, Hanif was in Dhaka at the time of the attack on his home, confirmed Zahurul Islam, a member of Kushita Zilla Council.
Protesters gathered in front of Hanif’s house at PTI road in Kushtia Sadar in the evening. Subsequently, they hurled brick chips at the upper floors and later damaged interior and furniture on the ground floor.
Kushtia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahfuzul Haque Chowdhury said the violence inflicted was minimal. Later, police brought the situation under control
Earlier, daylong clashes across the town left at least 70 people injured including 10 policemen, 10 reporters.
The protesters vandalised the office of Awami League’s Kushtia district unit, a sculpture of Bangabandhu and a traffic police box.
Police fired innumerable rounds of tear shells, tear gas and shotgun pellets while also lobbing sound grenades. Other law enforcement agencies showed little-to-no interest in containing the protesters.
During attack on Kushtia zilla office of Awami League, protesters beat Afroza Akter, vice-president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists.
