AL candidates start new reckoning in four constituencies in Sylhet

Sylhet Bureau

On the occasion of the upcoming 12th National Parliament election, the Awami League candidates have started a new reckoning with four of the six seats in Sylhet district. At the last moment, the seats will not be occupied by the candidates of Awami League and the partners of the Grand Alliance will have to leave - calculations are going on.

Glimpses are emerging – the seats may eventually be left open to the alliance partners. In this case, candidates of Awami League may end up in tough competition with Jatiya Party.

Sylhet-1 seat D. AK Abdul Momen and Imran Ahmad are the current members of parliament in Sylhet-4 constituencies. Both of them are serving as government ministers. Their nomination as heavyweight candidates is almost certain. In these two constituencies, there is no strong candidate for the coalition partner parties.

However, the calculation of the remaining four seats has changed in the election situation. Awami League can make different decisions in these four to give a glimpse of the division and rivalry of the alliance.

No candidate of Awami League participated in Sylhet-2 constituency in the 10th and 11th National Parliament elections. In both the elections, the seat was left to the Grand Alliance partner Jatiya Party. Awami League party candidate Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury had to withdraw his nomination due to giving up the seat to the Grand Alliance. This time there is a strong demand to nominate a party candidate for this seat, but the counting of votes may lead to a different decision. Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury is getting a boat ticket from the seat - it is almost certain. Former Member of Parliament Yahya Chowdhury is a candidate for nomination from Jatiya Party.

Awami League candidate has won in Sylhet-3 constituency in the last three elections. After the death of Awami League's winning candidate Mahmud Us Samad Qais in the 11th election, the party's candidate Habibur Rahman won the by-election. However, this seat may be lost to Awami League in the coalition elections. Or the candidate of Awami League may compete with the candidate of Jatiya Party.

Awami League candidate Hafiz Ahmad Majumder won in Sylhet-5 constituency in the 9th National Parliament election. Salim Uddin of the Jatiya Party won when the seat was shared with the coalition in the 10th National Assembly elections. Awami League took the seat again in the 11th round. After a gap of five years, there are many speculations about sharing this seat once again.

Awami League has held Sylhet-6 seats in the last three elections. After winning the 9th and 10th parliamentary elections, Nurul Islam Nahid served as the education minister of the government. So far in the election field this year.
