Aamir Khan deepfake video: Mumbai Police register FIR against unidentified person

Entertainment Desk

The police in Mumbai have registered an FIR against an unnamed person in connection with a deepfake video of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan in which he was seen promoting a political party for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The FIR was filed at the Khar Police station on Wednesday by Khan's office under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 419 (impersonation), 420 (cheating) and other sections of the Information Technology Act.

In the 27-second video clip, which seems to have been edited using artificial intelligence (AI), Khan could be seen talking about staying away from rhetoric (jumla).

The Bollywood actor’s office also issued a statement in this regard. "We want to clarify [that] Aamir Khan has never endorsed any political party in his 35-year career. He has dedicated his efforts to raising public awareness through campaigns for the Election Commission for many past elections,” the statement said.

“We are alarmed now to see a recent viral video alleging Mr Khan is promoting a particular party. He would like to clarify [that] this is a fake and totally untrue video,” the statement added. “He has reported the matter to various authorities, including filing an FIR with the Cyber Crime Cell of Mumbai Police.”

The upcoming Lok Sabha elections beginning tomorrow will be held in seven phases till 1 June this year. The constituency where Aamir Khan resides will vote in the fifth phase on 20 May. The results will be declared on 4 June.
