679 killed, 934 injured in road accidents in April

As many as 679 people lost their lives and 934 sustained injuries in road accidents during April, according to a press release issued by the Road Safety Foundation on Sunday.

Besides, the country witnessed a total of 672 road accidents during the month.

Among the fatalities, 259 individuals perished in 316 motorcycle accidents, accounting for 38.14% of the total deaths, with motorcycle accidents constituting 47% of the total incidents.

Analysis by the Road Safety Foundation revealed that 34.97% of accidents occurred on national highways, 39.58% on regional roads, 12.94% on rural roads, and 11.75% on city roads, with the remaining 0.74% at other locations.

Comparatively, March recorded 573 fatalities, averaging 18.48 deaths per day, while April saw an average of 22.63 deaths per day, reflecting a 22.45% increase in fatalities. Tragically, eight families were completely devastated by road accidents this month, leaving no survivors.

Additionally, the Road Safety Foundation estimated the financial loss of human resources due to April’s road accidents at Tk2,119.12 crore.
