Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj

The law and order situation in Narayanganj district is on the decline, with a series of alarming incidents creating panic among residents. On Saturday (April 12), police recovered three bodies including that of a newborn baby from Sonargaon and Rupganj upazilas of the district. The deceased are: Sirajul (70) from Sonargaon, Delwar (30) from Rupganj, and an unidentified newborn baby. In Sonargaon upazila, police recovered the body of an elderly man named Sirajul Islam (70). On Saturday morning, his body was found in a bush near a sandy field by the Menikhali branch of the Meghna River in the Kandargaon area of Pirojpur Union. He had been missing since the afternoon of April 6.

The matter was confirmed by Sonargaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mofizur Rahman. The deceased Sirajul Islam was a resident of Jhauchar village in the same union. After his disappearance, his son Shamim Reza filed a general diary at Sonargaon Police Station on the morning of April 7.

According to sources, Sirajul had been missing since April 6. His body was found lying in the bushes on Saturday morning. Police sent the body to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

OC Mofizur Rahman said that Sirajul had been missing for several days and was physically ill. "We assume he may have had a stroke or fell ill at the spot and couldn’t recover. No injury marks were found on the body. However, the cause of death will only be confirmed after the autopsy."

Meanwhile, in Rupganj upazila, police recovered the bloodied body of a young man along with a knife from the scene. In another incident, police also recovered the body of a newborn abandoned in the same upazila. While the identity of the youth was confirmed, the newborn remains unidentified.

At around 9:30 AM on Saturday, police recovered the body of the young man from inside a plot in Sector 1 of Purbachal. The deceased was identified as Delwar Hossain, son of Abu Sayeed from Sholakia area of Kishoreganj Sadar police station.

Rupganj Police Station OC Liakat Ali stated that locals informed police after seeing the body. “There were multiple injury marks on the body. We suspect miscreants stabbed him multiple times during the night and dumped the body here,” he said.

He added that a blood-stained knife was recovered from the scene. The youth’s identity was confirmed using the National ID card found in his pants pocket. The body was sent to Narayanganj General (Victoria) Hospital morgue. Legal proceedings are underway, the OC confirmed.

On the same day, around 11:00 AM, police recovered the body of a newborn from an abandoned property near the Khaishar area along the Demra-Kaliganj road in Daudpur, Rupganj.

Regarding this incident, OC Liakat Ali said the body was discovered by locals who then alerted police. The body was sent to the morgue. “We suspect someone may have dumped the newborn’s body during the night,” he added.
