Police have arrested three members of a theft gang, including the ringleader, in connection with a theft at Niloy Jewellers in a super market beside Sudharam Police Station in Maijdee town of Noakhali.
After the arrests, 9 bhori 4 ana 7 points of gold jewellery were recovered from their possession.
Noakhali Superintendent of Police (SP) A.T.M. Mosharraf Hossain disclosed the information in a press release on Sunday.
The accused were arrested on Saturday during raids conducted at several locations in Cumilla district.
The arrested persons are Md. Morshed alias Mosharraf, the ringleader of an inter-district gold theft gang; his wife Shilpi Akter; and Md. Alauddin alias Picchi Alauddin (26).
According to police, on Thursday, 1 January, at around 10:30 pm, thieves broke the shutter lock of shop No. 424, “Niloy Jewellers,” on the fourth floor of Noakhali Super Market and stole 127 bhori of gold jewellery. Following the incident, on 2 January, the victim businessman Mir Mosharraf Hossain filed a case at Sudharam Police Station.
Police said that immediately after the incident they began collecting secret information and using information technology to identify the thieves and recover the stolen gold. After reviewing CCTV footage and using technological support, police conducted a raid on Saturday morning on the Bhanga Road area of Muradnagar in Cumilla district. In the operation, the ringleader Morshed and his wife Shilpi were arrested. In the same operation, Picchi Alauddin was arrested from his residence, from where 3 bhori 5 ana 2 rati of gold jewellery were recovered. Later, police searched Shilpi’s house in the Baro Dighi Par area of Hathazari Police Station in Chattogram district and recovered 5 bhori 15 ana 7 points of gold jewellery.
Noakhali SP A.T.M. Mosharraf Hossain further said that Morshed and Picchi Alauddin confessed to their crimes in court and gave statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Following court orders, the accused were sent to jail.
