18 fishermen jailed in Shibalaya

Some 18 fishermen have been jailed, nets and hilsa fish have been seized in a raid on the Jamuna in Shibalaya.
The seized hilsa has been given to various local orphanages.
It is learnt that Shibalaya Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) SM Foyez Uddin conducted an operation in the Jamuna river in the upazila on Thursday, October 17, to protect Mother Hilsa. At that time, he arrested 18 fishermen, destroyed about 2 lakh meters of illegal nets and seized 3 tons of hilsa fish. Members of Upazila Fisheries Office, Coast Guard and Ansar forces cooperated in the operation.
Later, a mobile court was set up and 18 people were sentenced to 18 days in prison. Destruction of nets and hilsa fish are given to local orphanages.
Upazila Assistant Commissioner ( Land) SM Foyez Uddin said, "Some unscrupulous businessmen are violating the ban and extracting hilsa in the hope of extra profit during the breeding season of mother hilsa, which is not right at all.
The upazila administration will conduct regular operations until November 3 to implement the "mother hilsa conservation campaign-2024".
