159 bhories of gold stolen from Dhanmondi shop in 7 minutes

Staff Correspondent

A daring theft unfolded on Friday as thieves made off with 159 bhories of gold ornaments from a jewellery shop in Shimanto Square, a bustling shopping mall in the capital’s Dhanmondi.

According to CCTV footage, the meticulously planned heist took just 7 minutes and 25 seconds and involved nine perpetrators, seven of whom wore masks to conceal their identities.

The gang struck at 1:01pm, timing their move when employees of Crown Diamond and Jewellers had closed the shop’s shutter to step away for Jummah prayers. Acting with precision, one thief draped a shawl over the shutter to obscure their actions, while two others swiftly cut through the lock. A fourth accomplice entered the shop, emerging moments later with the stolen gold.

Meanwhile, seven members of the group dispersed to nearby shops, creating a diversion to deflect attention from the heist.

The audacity of the crime was revealed when the shop’s staff returned and discovered that all the gold ornaments—valued at 159 bhories—were missing.

Speaking about the incident, Abdul Alim, inspector (Investigation) at Dhanmondi police station, assured that efforts were underway to identify and apprehend the culprits.

The jewellery shop, situated on the ground floor and surrounded by cloth and cosmetics outlets, had its security compromised despite its prime location.

Kazi Akash, the shop’s proprietor, has filed a case and expressed shock over the theft. "The thieves stole every single ornament after cutting through the shutter lock," he lamented.
