145 Bangladeshis repatriated from Libya
Staff Correspondent
A group of 145 undocumented Bangladeshi nationals arrived in Dhaka early Thursday morning after seeking voluntary repatriation from Libya.
They traveled on a chartered Buraq Air flight (UZ0222), which landed at 5:30 am.
The successful repatriation was facilitated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The returnees had originally entered Libya through human traffickers, hoping to illegally reach Europe by sea. However, many were subjected to kidnapping and torture during their time in Libya, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Upon arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, they were received by government officials and IOM representatives.
IOM provided each returnee with Tk 6,000 and food supplies.
Additional support, including treatment and temporary accommodation, will be arranged if needed.
The government has urged the public to be cautious and avoid illegal migration to Libya.
Efforts are ongoing to safely repatriate other Bangladeshi nationals currently detained in Libyan detention centers.
Several batches of undocumented Bangladeshis have already returned home from Libya in recent months.
