Another 140 Bangladeshi nationals, who were detained in Libya for entering the country illegally and adversely affected by the flood in its Derna city, have been repatriated with the assistance of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
They landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka by a flight of Buraq Air, the first Libyan private airline, around 6:30 am on Thursday, said a foreign ministry press release here.
A total of 113 individuals, who were affected by floods in Derna city in eastern Libya, and 27 Bangladeshis detained in Ganfuda (Benghazi) Detention Centre, are among the returnees, read the press release.
The embassy took necessary steps to assist expatriate Bangladeshi citizens affected by Cyclone Daniel and floods in the eastern part of Libya. The embassy team visited Derna city multiple times, inquiring about the Bangladeshis affected by the flood.
Furthermore, the embassy provided emergency medicines, relief materials, and financial assistance to the affected expatriates in Derna and Al-Baida cities of Libya. However, there was a delay in the repatriation of flood-affected expatriates in Derna City due to the loss of their valid documents, including passports.
Upon landing at the airport, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the IOM welcomed the repatriated Bangladeshi citizens at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Each repatriated individual received Tk 5,919 as pocket money and some food items as gifts from the IOM.
