10 killed in separate road mishaps in four districts

At least ten people were killed and 22 others injured in separate road accidents in four districts today.

In Chapainawabganj, four young men were killed in two separate road accidents in Shibganj upazila of the district.

In the first accident, two motorcycle riders were killed after their motorcycle lost control and fell into an under construction culvert in Muslimpur area of Shahbajpur union on the Chapainawabganj-Sonamasjid highway on Tuesday.

The deceased were Habibur Rahman, 20, son of Sadikul Islam and Abul Hayat, 35, son of Zamir Uddin, both residents of Baliadighi Madhya Bazar area in Shahbajpur union. They worked as truck labourers.

Shibganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Matiur Rahman confirmed the matter. The bodies were handed over to their families.

In another accident, two more young men were killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a motorcycle near Soleman Degree College in Pukuria village of Kansat union around 1.30pm.

The deceased were Asad, 19, son of Professor Md Erfan of Shektola village of Shibganj Municipality and Md Jaber Ali, 19, son of Md Zafar Ali of Rasulpur village of Shibganj upazila.

Asad and Jaber were travelling back home from Kansat Bazar on a motorcycle when they collided head-on with a truck near the college.

Asad died at the scene. Jaber Ali was rescued by locals and taken to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared him dead.

Shibganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Matiur Rahman confirmed the matter.

In Sirajganj, a pickup van driver and a milk trader were killed in a collision between a truck and a pickup van at Patdhari Bazar on the Dhaka-Pabna highway under Ullapara upazila of the district early this morning.

According to Hatikumerul Highway Police Sub-Inspector Kishore Kumar, a truck collided with a pickup van bound for Shahjadpur. Milk trader Saddam Hossain, who was travelling in the pickup, died on the spot.

The pickup driver, Rezwan Hossain, was critically injured in the crash. Local residents rescued him and took him to Sirajganj Medical College Hospital where he later died while undergoing treatment.

Rezwan, 35, is the resident of Goalbatan village in Singra upazila of Natore, while Saddam, 30, was from Helensa Para in Bogura Sadar.

SI Kishore Kumar said the bodies were handed over to the families. Police also seized the truck involved in the accident, but its driver fled the scene.

In Dinajpur, a schoolboy was killed after being run over by a bus on the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj highway in Bat Toli area under Phulbari upazila of the district this morning.

The deceased was identified as Sifat Raihan, 10, a third-grade student of North Point Kindergarten School and son of Mahmud Hossain of Uttar Sujapur village in Phulbari municipality.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Phulbari Police Station, Inspector Md Shahidul Islam, confirmed the matter.

The accident occurred around 8.30am when Sifat was going to school with his mother, Rikta Begum, and his two-year-old sibling Sijan. A bus of Shahi Paribahan travelling from Dinajpur towards Bogura hit Sifat and his mother in the area.

Sifat went under the wheels of the bus and sustained critical injuries. He was rescued and taken to Phulbari Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Rikta Begum and Sijan are currently receiving treatment at the health complex.

In Gopalganj, three people, including a woman, were killed and at least 20 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck in Sadar upazila this afternoon.

The accident occurred at noon in Boultali Bridge area on the Gopalganj-Tekerhat regional highway, said Inspector Md. Shafiul Alam, in-charge of the Boultali Police Outpost.

The identities of the deceased could not be known.

He said a local bus traveling from Tekerhat towards Gopalganj collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction. The bus fell into a roadside ditch, while the truck overturned on the highway.

Three passengers of the bus died on the spot, while at least 20 others sustained injuries. Police and firefighters, with the help of local residents, later recovered the bodies and rescued the injured.

The injured were taken to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital and Gopalganj 250-Bed General Hospital for treatment.

Police said the death toll could rise as some of the injured are in critical condition.
