1,067 Bangladeshis put in Indian prisons over past two years: Commission on enforced disappearance

Staff Correspondent

At least, 1,067 Bangladeshis have been kept in Indian prisons over the past two and a half years, Mainul Islam Chowdhury, president of the commission probing enforced disappearances, told reporters Tuesday.

The commission is investigating whether the detainees were subjected to enforced disappearance, the retired judge said.

So far, the police in border districts and BGB have provided a list of 140 Bangladeshis pushed in from India. As of now, investigators have not found any case of state-backed abduction among the 140 individuals.

The commission has so far verified claims of nearly 1,000 cases of enforced disappearances, among complaints of 1,752 abductions during the Awami League rule. Officials are also working to locate the 330 missing persons who were allegedly abducted by state-backed forces.

Only the abductors and not their reporting law enforcement agency should be held accountable for incidents of enforced disappearance, Mainul Islam Chowdhury noted.
