Youth beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Noakhali

A youth was beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Hatiya, Noakhali. In this incident, the police immediately arrested an electrician named Tarek Aziz (35). However, the police say that the young man died of fright after being beaten.
The deceased, Md. Lokman Hossain (35), is the son of Abul Kashem of Sonarpara village in Chakpara, Sherpur. He was an employee of the Power Development Board (PDB) contractor.
The body was sent to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital morgue for autopsy around noon on Friday. Earlier, the incident took place at Jahajmara Bazar in the upazila at around 7:30 pm on Thursday.
The arrested Tarek is the son of Kamal Uddin of Charheya Grare of Jahajmara Union in the upazila and is an electrician by profession.
According to police and local sources, Lokman and Mostafizur Rahman (28) are workers of the Power Development Board (PDB) contractor. Both of them are residents of Sherpur district. They were working on the power supply line of their contractor in Jahazmara Union of the upazila and saved several scrubs.
Later, the two sold the scrubs to a shop in Asad Nagar Trimohani of Charhiya village of the upazila. On Thursday evening, they went to the scrap shop again to find out the weight of the goods they had sold. There, three people including local electrician Tarek Aziz accused the two workers of theft. Later, they threatened the two, abused them, tied them up and beat them up. At one stage, Lokman was hit on the hand and back with an iron rod.
In this regard, Hatia Police Station OC AKM Ajmal Huda said, after receiving the information, the police went to the spot and found both of them alive while tied up. When the police immediately untied the two, Lokman fell ill on the spot. He died immediately. Initially, I think he died of fear and panic from the mob.
In response to another question, the OC further said, he was not beaten to death on suspicion of being a thief. There are no signs of injury on the body of the deceased youth. There is a small scar on his back. There are no other injuries. He may have suffered a heart attack due to fear and panic. The relatives of the deceased have been informed. A case will be registered if a complaint is filed.
