World Development Information Day : No alternative political leadership to Sheikh Hasina

World Development Information Day : No alternative political leadership to Sheikh Hasina

Dr. Muhammad Mahtab Hossain Mazed

Today is Monday 24 October, World Development Information Day 2022This day has been celebrated globally on October 24 every year since 1972 by the initiative of the United Nations. The goal of the World Development Information Day is to consider the opinion of the world public to solve the problems that hinder development.

At the same time, the purpose of the day is to strengthen international cooperationHowever, the main purpose of declaring this day was to draw the public's attention to the need to strengthen international cooperation for the sake of development problems and their solutionsOn the other hand, the United Nations has adopted the United Nations Day as the Development Information Day in principle, because the International Development Strategy for the 2nd Development Decade was adopted by the United Nations on October 20, 1970.

The aim of the General Session is to disseminate information, create public opinion, increase public awareness of development issues, especially among the youth, and expand the field of international cooperation in solving development issues.

Incidentally, the United Nations was established as a symbol of the united determination of the people of the world in the context of the horrors and painful memories of the global armed conflict. Most of the activities of the United Nations are spread in the fields of international peace and security, social and economic development, establishment of human rights, fulfillment of basic human needs, etc. Many people have the misconception that the United Nations is only engaged in peacekeeping.

However, most of the activities of the United Nations today are devoted to development and humanitarian cooperation. Every year, the United Nations provides more than two and a half billion dollars in funds through various programs in about 135 countries of the world. Two-thirds of the world's total population are residents of developing countries. And so most of the work of the United Nations is directed towards the economic and social development of developing countries.

Because, the people of these countries live through problems like poverty, hunger, illiteracy, disease and grief. Since its inception, the United Nations has taken Article 55 of its Charter, i.e. ensuring a high standard of living, eliminating unemployment and economic and social progress, seriously. The United Nations has helped the development of poor countries. Beginning in the 1960s, the General Assembly proclaimed four successive United Nations Development Decades to highlight various specific programs and activities undertaken in aid of developing countries. Since the early 1960s, the United Nations has emphasized the promotion of integrated development with the aim of accelerating balanced and balanced development.

This development effort was formally reflected in the 1969 General Assembly Declaration on Social Progress and Development. The declaration states that the right to work should be ensured for all, the formation of trade unions and decision-making through collective bargaining, the creation of productive workplaces, the elimination of unemployment and the improvement of job standards, the creation of a healthy working environment for all, the improvement of health and Ensure security provisionsetc. to ensure fair remuneration of labor without discrimination of any kind. The first development decade declared by the United Nations was 1961-1970.

The second decade was declared 1970-1980The development plan of the second decade was based on justice and equality, the fundamental equality of the international economic system, sovereignty, independence, common interests and cooperation among states regardless of the economic and social system, which will eliminate inequality and injustice, eliminate the gap between developed and developing countriesWe know that the public is deprived of basic rights in the information lock-up. As a result, the development of a country stagnates.

Accurate and reliable information forms a bridge between the government and the people of a country. It plays an important role in preventing corruption and establishing good governance. Apart from that, there is a need for effective right to information laws in all countries. Without this right, it is not possible for the public to know all the information beyond legal barriers. It is necessary to expand information technology facilities for free flow of information.

Therefore, modern systems should be developed in obtaining, managing, storing and distributing informationThe main reason for celebrating this day is to make all the information about the United Nations available to the common peopleHumans have been trying to survive and improve the quality of life since the beginning of the world The agricultural and industrial revolutions took place with the aim of subduing this world and conquering nature and using it better for human welfare.

All countries that are currently in the initial stages of development or underdevelopedThere is a lot of talk about development in countries Nowadays development has become the main objective of various plans and policies But what does development mean and can it be achieved very quickly based on any criteria or vision?

The words development, growth, progress are often widely used in political and economic writings or discussions in the world In most economic studies these terms are used interchangeably Some economists say that there is a difference between the two words growth and developmentthink Growth usually refers to some economic and quantitative driving force or criterion For example, per capita income, average national income or output etc Development, on the other hand, takes into consideration the status of these economic indicators as well as the infrastructural changes In other words the scope of development is more extensiveAnd the development process has multidimensional aspects or categories.

A group of economists think that equitable and fair distribution of resources, poverty alleviation, medical and health conditions, adequate education or training, employment generation, proper use of human and natural resources and public welfare are some of the main indicators of developmentEminent economist Michael Todaro said, economic development is the improvement of the quality of life of people at all levels of society This improvement happens due to economic growthDr. MM Mazed, the eminent researcher of Bangladesh and the founder of jatio rogi kallan Society wrote a column about today's issue in his column...

We know that the public is deprived of basic rights in the information lock-up.

It is important to expand information technology facilities for free flow of information. Therefore, modern systems should be developed for obtaining, managing, storing and distributing information. The main reason for celebrating this day is to make all the information related to the United Nations available to the common people.

And in 1971, under the leadership of Bangabandhu, after Bangladesh gained independence, Bangabandhu returned to Bangladesh on January 10, 1972. Returning to the country, he focused on the development of the economy and infrastructure of the war-torn Bangladesh as a whole. According to his plans, Bangladesh was progressing quite well. But the pro-Pakistani band of assassins did not allow Bangabandhu to establish his golden Bengal. On August 15, 1975, Bangabandhu and his family were killed and an autocratic regime was established in the country.

Later, until 1990, various military governments ruled the state through the barrel of a gun. Some claim themselves as proponents of democracy. After the fall of the Ershad government in 1990, when democracy was re-established, the people of Bangladesh began to witness a form of electoral violence every five years.

After the elections under the caretaker government in 1991, a caretaker government was established in Bangladesh, but the acceptability of the caretaker government was questioned within a short period of time. In continuation of this, from 2007 to 2008, a kind of caretaker government with the support of the Bangladeshi military performed the duties. Under that government, Bangladesh Awami League came to power by getting a huge majority in the 2008 elections.

After assuming state power in 2009, Hon'ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina started planning to establish her father's unfinished dream of 'Golden Bangla'. At that time many called Bangladesh as a bottomless basket for the second time. From that situation, Sheikh Hasina slowly started making Bangladesh a role model for development in her own plan. When Sheikh Hasina formed the government in 2009, the size of the budget of Bangladesh was 87 thousand crores, from that place, in the last 13 and a half years, the size of the budget of Bangladesh has increased to 600,000 crores.

At one time, many people called the budget of the Sheikh Hasina government as a dream budget. According to them, the government did not have the capacity to implement the budget of this huge amount. Despite criticism from many, the government under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina has proved that any objective can be achieved if there is will power. As a result, Bangladesh stands on a solid economic foundation.

The visionary leadership of the head of government is very important to take any state to the pinnacle of development. A leader's job is to lead the country. If the leader does not have clear goals then the country can never move forward properly.Just as Bangabandhu slowly prepared the people of Bangladesh for independence through his visionary leadership, Sheikh Hasina, inspired by her father's ideals, continues to implement various programs to make Bangladesh a role model for development.

This achievement was possible due to his leadership qualities. In many cases detractors have criticized various policies and activities of Sheikh Hasina. But at the end of the day they proved themselves wrong. For example, when the World Bank decided not to finance the Padma Bridge, civil society, economists and opposition leaders in Bangladesh repeatedly said that the Padma Bridge would never be built in Bangladesh. Even the BNP Chairperson has said that the Padma Bridge in Bangladesh will never be built and even if it is, it will collapse. Faced with that reality, Sheikh Hasina specifically announced that she would build the Padma Bridge in Bangladesh with her own funding.

He has shown by building the Padma Bridge. The Padma Bridge is no longer a dream. It is a reality that has been opened up for public consumption. Similarly, projects such as the Dhaka Metrorail Project, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Project, and the tunnel project under the Karnaphuli River were criticized by many when they were undertaken. Because the government did not have the financial capacity to implement such projects. But Sheikh Hasina has proved that any difficult goal can be achieved with vision and competence in leadership.

Another aspect of Sheikh Hasina's leadership is honesty. In the political scene of Bangladesh, the involvement of people in power and their family members in corruption has become a common issue. But the case of Sheikh Hasina and her family members being involved in corruption has not happened so far.

It is true that the long stay in power has created a class of leadership within the Awami League who have immersed themselves in corruption and encouraged those around them to commit corruption. It is also true that corruption is one of the biggest problems of the current government. In this reality, corruption becomes institutionalized if the head of government and his family members are involved in corruption. Judging from that aspect, it can be clearly said that Sheikh Hasina and her family members have not been involved in corruption so far.

After winning the 2018 elections and assuming power, Sheikh Hasina declared zero tolerance against corruption. His government took a strong stand against the corrupt in many cases and started bringing the corrupt to justice in many cases. But I don't know why for some unknown reason sometimes this noble purpose of the government is hindered. We believe that Hon'ble Prime Minister will take necessary measures keeping this matter in mind.

Those who have witnessed Sheikh Hasina in the last 13 and a half years cannot deny that she has been able to take herself to unique heights as a leader. His leadership qualities were not only appreciated among the people of the country, but his leadership was appreciated in the world court. From the leader of Bangladesh, he has established himself as a world leader. In addition to conducting development activities within the country, she has always been involved in various issues including climate change and women's empowerment in the international arena, so international organizations and heads of state of major countries have praised her work. Even his economic activities and development plans have been praised by the leaders of different countries of the world.

The government's success in dealing with Covid-19 has been praised globally. Under his leadership, recommendations for inclusion of Bangladesh in the list of developing countries have been received. Sheikh Hasina's government is trying to make Bangladesh a developed country in 2041. He has worked tirelessly for the last 13 and a half years to achieve this goal.

Now the question that many people ask is that Sheikh Hasina's alternative leadership has been created in Bangladesh? It can be clearly said that In the current situation, even within the Awami League, no visionary leader like Sheikh Hasina is seen till now. I have left out the words of those who are in the opposition political parties.

Because many of them have plunged into the abyss of politics by immersing themselves in corruption. Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has become the symbol of the hopes and aspirations of 17 crore people of Bangladesh. It is because of his visionary leadership that Bangladesh has achieved the position it is today. But the continuity of the government has helped him achieve this goal because in the political reality of a country like Bangladesh, if there is no continuity of the government, development is hindered.

Finally, I want to say that the people of Bangladesh trusted him and gave him the opportunity to work according to his plan. We believe that the people of Bangladesh will have the same faith in her in the upcoming 12th National Parliament Elections to be held in 2023 because the thing that we all should keep in mind at this moment is that - Sheikh Hasina's alternative has not yet been created in the political context of Bangladesh. Just as Bangabandhu and Bangladesh are used synonymously, Sheikh Hasina has now become another name for the development of Bangladesh.

As a result, he has become an essential part of Bangladesh's politics and development system. Success has come in many ways. If the continuity of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government, the privileged daughter of the father of the nation, is maintained, Bangladesh will be in the leadership seat in the future technology revolution. Therefore, creating chaos with false information is a serious injustice. Islam forbids the disclosure of false information. To present an information must be presented in beautiful, fluent, contemporary sweet language.
