The life of Halima Khatun, a resident of Gomra village under Nolkura Union in Jhenaigati Upazila of Sherpur, stands as a poignant chronicle of unending hardship, poverty, and profound maternal anguish.

Born into extreme scarcity, Halima lost her father, Hazrat Ali, a day laborer, some 15 years ago, leaving her family in severe destitution with nothing beyond a single room built on 10 decimal plots of government land. Following her father's passing, her brother married and established a separate household, leaving Halima to navigate a life marked by continuous struggle.

Her marriage brought no relief from hardship. According to local accounts, her husband is reportedly drug-addicted, vagrant, and abusive. Unable to meet persistent dowry demands, Halima was eventually driven out of her marital home despite having two children, leaving her stranded with her four-year-old daughter, Hasi.

Around two years ago, Halima faced an even more agonizing chapter when she gave birth to a second daughter via Cesarean section. Burdened by medical expenses she could not afford due to abject poverty, she was ultimately compelled to give the infant up for adoption—a heart-wrenching decision that continues to torment her as a mother.

Currently, Halima and her young daughter live without any permanent shelter, sheltered by her elderly mother, Rasheda Begum, who works as a daily wage laborer in other people's homes. The meager income barely sustains the three-member household, forcing them to endure frequent half-meals and daily uncertainty.

Local observers note that Halima's plight reflects the broader vulnerabilities faced by marginalized women trapped in extreme poverty. Community advocates have called upon local administrative authorities, social welfare organizations, and affluent citizens to extend financial assistance, secure housing, and employment opportunities to help Halima rebuild her life and ensure a secure future for her daughter.
