Waterlogging leaves Sherpur farmer’s land uncultivable in Jhenaigati
Khorshed Alam, Sherpur
An initiative by a local Union Parishad to alleviate waterlogging has reportedly ruined the livelihood of a farmer in Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur, whose primary cultivable land has been rendered completely unusable due to a poorly planned drainage pipeline.
The victim, Monir Hossain, a resident of Sandhakura village under Nalkura union and son of Arman Gazi, has lodged a written complaint with the UNO seeking immediate intervention.
According to the complaint, heavy rainwater routinely accumulates on the western side of the Haldigram Chourasta Bazar-Garokuna road, causing severe waterlogging for several local residents.
To resolve the issue, the Upazila Parishad allocated Tk 240,000 for a drainage pipeline project, which was executed by the local Union Parishad. However, during the implementation, the union parishad authorities laid the pipeline underneath the road and directed the entire water discharge directly onto Monir's agricultural property.
As a direct consequence of this drainage alignment, massive amounts of sand, silt, and household waste have flooded approximately one acre of Monir's farmland. The accumulation of debris has completely stripped the soil of its fertility, leaving the plot entirely unfit for regular cultivation..
When contacted regarding the issue, local Union Parishad Member Abdul Kadir acknowledged the situation and stated that necessary measures would be taken to ensure that the farmer's land does not suffer permanent damage.
