US may cut tariff further if trade gap narrows: Commerce Adviser
Staff Correspondent
Commerce Adviser Sk Bashiruddin on Sunday said the United States may reduce reciprocal tariff on Bangladeshi products from the current 20 percent if the bilateral trade deficit comes down.
The Commerce Adviser said this while talking to reporters after a meeting with the Brendan Lynch, Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, held at the Secretariat.
“The US delegation is here on a three-day visit to finalise a trade agreement based on discussions and mutual understanding on countervailing duties. We had a cordial and productive discussion with them,” said the adviser.
By narrowing the trade deficit with the US remains a key goal for Bangladesh and achieving that could pave the way for reduced tariffs on Bangladeshi exports, he said.
He said the meeting discussed progress on promises made by Bangladesh to increase imports from the US as part of efforts to address the trade gap — particularly in sectors like agriculture, energy and aviation.
