Two bomb-like objects found during suspect hunt in Demra

Staff Correspondent

Police have recovered two bomb-like objects at Sarulia in Dhaka’s Demra.

A Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) official at the scene said one person has been detained in connection with the incident.

The objects, wrapped in black tape, were found in front of West Nijhumbag Taleb Ali Mosque during a police operation in the area on Sunday afternoon.

Members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s bomb disposal unit were called to the scene after the discovery. One of the objects has already been neutralised, while work is under way on the other.

Several videos from the scene show a large crowd gathering as police officers stand outside the mosque.

“We received the information at 5pm. The bomb disposal unit was then alerted and has been carrying out its operation. One person involved in the incident has been detained. We cannot say anything more for now. We have been kept far from the scene,” Demra Police chief Mohammad Taifur Rahman told The Country Today around 9pm.

A bomb disposal unit official said their team was working according to the situation but declined to provide further details.

A CTTC official at the scene said police had been investigating an attack on officers at Jatrabari’s Janapath intersection a few days ago.

While trying to arrest suspects in that case, investigators found the two bomb-like objects, the official said.

The CTTC official said he was not authorised to disclose the arrestee’s name.
