Transform climate policies into actionable projects,  measurable outcomes: Environment Minister

Staff Correspondent

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo emphasized the need to translate national climate policies and plans into integrated programs, high-quality projects, suitable financing, and measurable outcomes on Wednesday.

Addressing the inaugural session of the two-day "Bangladesh Climate Development Partnership (BCDP) Knowledge Conference 2026" as the chief guest at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka, the minister noted that today's development decisions will dictate climate risks for decades to come, making climate assessments vital for all major investments.

On the occasion, the minister formally launched the BCDP web portal, a digital platform designed to enable real-time project monitoring, streamline internal and international climate finance pipelines, and enhance transparency in investment management.

Minister Mintoo highlighted that while adaptive investments may not always generate direct financial returns, they ensure critical public welfare. He urged for private investment in clean energy and sustainable infrastructure, calling for climate finance structures to reflect Bangladesh's development priorities.

Speaking as a special guest, State Minister for Environment Sheikh Faridul Islam highlighted growing climate pressures on coastal communities, including rising salinity and declining crop yields.

Dr. Md. Saimum Parvez, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Environment, Forest and Climate Change, underlined locally-led adaptation, accessible grant financing, and institutional capacity building, calling for conference deliberations to translate into concrete action plans.

ADB Executive Director Satya Srinivas Lolla noted that implementing Bangladesh's national climate plans requires substantial public and private investments, emphasizing ADB's commitment to bridging funding and technical expertise.

Organized by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in collaboration with the ADB, the conference gathered over 500 policymakers, development partners, experts, and civil society representatives. Chaired by Acting Secretary of the ministry Dr. Fahmida Khanom, the opening ceremony featured a welcome address by Additional Secretary (Climate Change) Mohammad Naveed Shafiullah and was moderated by Joint Secretary Munira Sultana. The conference will continue through October 8.
