
Training workshop urges journalists to play vital role in combating tobacco Use

Speakers at a training workshop in Natore on Wednesday emphasized the vital role journalists can play in raising public awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco products on health, the environment, and the economy.
The workshop, titled “The Negative Effects of Tobacco Products and Ways to Combat It,” was held at Cicily Chinese Restaurant in Natore town.
It was organized by Bangladesh Blind Mission (BBM), a non-governmental organization working on health and disability issues, with the aim of empowering journalists to contribute to the fight against tobacco use through their reporting.
Around 25 journalists from across the district participated in the day-long event.
In his welcome remarks, Khondker Abdeul Islam, BBM’s Admin and Finance Manager, greeted the participants and expressed hope that the training would inspire more tobacco-related reporting in local media.Tareque Mahmood, Project Officer of BBM, outlined the objective of the workshop, highlighting the urgent need to involve media professionals in tobacco control efforts.
Addressing the participants, Shuvashish Chandra Mohanto, a nationally recognized development consultant, said journalists have a powerful platform through which they can influence public opinion.
“Through investigative reports, features, and editorials, journalists can highlight the health risks of tobacco and inform the public about its broader social and economic consequences,” he noted.
He added that widespread awareness, particularly through local and national media, is essential to reduce tobacco consumption in the country.
Farazi Ahmed Rafik, President of the Natore District Press Club, formally inaugurated the event. He lauded BBM’s initiative and encouraged journalists to utilize their platforms to advocate for a tobacco-free society.
“Events like this not only inform journalists but also motivate them to carry forward the message through impactful reporting,” he said.
During the workshop, participating journalists expressed their commitment to promote awareness through their work and help reduce tobacco use in their communities.
The event was moderated by Nasiruddin Hirok.
