Tanvir Alam, President of DU Chess Club and a student of the University's Department of Information Science and Library Management, has become the champion in the 'Dhaka University Chess Championship'.

The first runner-up in this competition was Kazi Zarin Tasnim, a student of the 2022-2023 academic year of the University's Institute of Information Technology, and the second runner-up was Badsha Alamgir, a student of the 2017-18 academic year of the Department of Applied Statistics.

On the occasion of the club's 38th anniversary, the traditional Dhaka University Chess Club organized this competition titled 'Winter Chess Festival' at the Student-Teacher Center from 1-3 January 2025.

In addition, the Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman Memorial Rapid Rating Tournament was held on 3 January 2025 on the occasion of the 'Winter Chess Festival'. More than 300 chess players from all over the country participated in this tournament held in memory of the late Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman, an alumnus of the Department of Anthropology of Dhaka University. Anat Chowdhury, a student of BRAC University, became the champion of the tournament. Fide Master Tahsin Tajwar Zia, son of Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman, became the 1st runner-up and Fide Master Md. Sharif Hossain became the 2nd runner-up.

Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, Moderator of Dhaka University Chess Club and Proctor of the University, attended the closing ceremony of the competition as the chief guest on Friday, January 3, 2025 and distributed prizes among the winners.

The award ceremony was presided over by club president Tanvir Alam and was attended by Grandmaster Rifat Bin Sattar, former general secretaries of the club Shamim Akand and Mohammad Shafqat Hossain, joint secretary of Bangladesh Chess Federation Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan (Lavlu) and late grandmaster Ziaur Rahman's wife Labanya Rahman as special guests. Chess club general secretary Imran Sharif Shuvo and organizing secretary Fariha Sumona conducted the program.
