A 20-year-old speech-impaired woman has allegedly been raped repeatedly by her maternal cousin after being threatened and lured with money in Kalia upazila of Narail.

The accused, identified as Amir Munshi, 35, son of Siddiq Munshi of Rajapur village, was arrested by Kalia Police within five hours of a written complaint being filed against him.
According to the complaint and the victim’s family, the speech-impaired woman had been living at her elder sister’s house in Rajapur village. Her sister works as a tailor in Terokhada and leaves home every day for work. The woman was therefore often alone at home for extended periods, as her sister’s only child also remained at school during the daytime.

The family alleged that Amir Munshi took advantage of the situation and raped the woman on several occasions by intimidating her and offering her money. As the victim is unable to speak, she could not inform anyone about the alleged abuse for a long time, the family claimed.
The complaint further stated that on the morning of August 21, the accused allegedly entered the house when the woman was alone and raped her against her will.

The incident reportedly came to light when the accused’s aunt saw what had happened and informed the victim’s elder sister. Later, family members and local residents gathered at the scene.

The victim’s sister said, “My sister cannot speak. That is why she could not tell anyone about the abuse she had been subjected to for so long. As her sister, I want justice and demand exemplary punishment for the accused.”

Kalia Police OC Idris Ali said police launched an operation immediately after receiving the written complaint and arrested the accused.

He said necessary medical examinations of the victim were being arranged and that the accused would be produced before a court after completion of the legal procedures.
Police said the allegations are being investigated.

The accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
