A healthy baby girl was born in the intercity Ekota Express train en route from Dhaka to Dinajpur.
The mother, 25-year-old Rina Begum, gave birth while the train was passing between Fulbari and Parbatipur stations around 7:15 PM on Friday.
Rina Begum, a garment worker and wife of Selim Ahmed from Barobari village in Pirganj upazila of Thakurgaon, was traveling with her sister-in-law. She had taken maternity leave and was heading home from Dhaka. Labor pains began shortly after the train crossed Fulbari station, prompting male passengers in the compartment to vacate the area. With the help of female passengers, Rina gave birth to a baby girl on the moving train.
Tarik Mahbub, the train conductor and guard of Ekota Express, said they learned about the birth after it occurred. Upon arrival at Parbatipur station, they offered to take the mother to the railway hospital, but Rina's mother declined. The train authorities then informed Dinajpur Station Superintendent.
ABM Ziaur Rahman, Dinajpur Station Superintendent, stated, “Upon receiving the news, we informed the Fire Service, who promptly arrived with an ambulance. The mother and newborn were then taken to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.”
Dr. Nazmul Hossain, an intern at the gynecology ward of the hospital, confirmed that while the mother is in stable condition, the baby was born prematurely and is under observation in the neonatal ward, receiving appropriate medical care.
