Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) engineers conducted field inspections and structural health assessments on 13 bridges across three upazilas in Barguna district on Wednesday.
The inspection drive was executed under the Barishal Division Road Widening and Strengthening Project alongside the Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Iron Bridges in Southern Region Project. The field assessments covered four bridges in Barguna Sadar upazila, two in Bamna upazila, and seven in Amtali upazila.
Executive Engineer of the LGED Design Unit Tapas Chowdhury, Senior Assistant Engineer Shyamal Kumar Gain, respective upazila engineers, structural engineers, project consultants, and local residents were present during the field visits.
During the inspections, officials and technical experts emphasized the necessity of widening the bridges in tandem with ongoing road expansion initiatives. They highlighted that reconstructing and rehabilitating the structures to withstand heavy vehicular traffic is critical, particularly during the peak watermelon harvesting season when heavy trucks operate extensively in the region.
Engineers noted that constructing wider, climate-resilient, and high-capacity bridges will significantly facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce from the southern region—specifically Barguna's watermelon yields—while making local road communication safer and more efficient.
