Jhikargacha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) M. Saifullah issued a three-day deadline to local traders to remove unauthorized shops and goods occupying public roads and footpaths in the Bankra area of Jashore on Thursday.
The UNO issued the directive following an inspection of key thoroughfares in Bankra around 11:00 AM, accompanied by local officials, market committee leaders, and law enforcement personnel. The inspection covered several heavily congested areas, including Parbazar Bridge, Kapor Patti, Bankra Degree College Road, Bankra High School Road, Bagachra, Harikhali, and portions of the main Jhikargacha Road.
Local residents reported that business owners had consistently encroached upon pedestrian walkways by setting up temporary stalls and storing inventory along the roadside. The practice forced pedestrians onto active roadways, creating severe traffic bottlenecks and heightening the risk of accidents.
Warned against illegal commercial use of public thoroughfares, UNO M. Saifullah stated that legal action would be taken against non-compliant traders once the three-day period expires.
Bankra Union Parishad Chairman Master Anisur Rahman and Bankra Police Investigation Centre In-Charge Md. Shahidul Islam were present during the inspection. Local residents welcomed the administrative intervention, expressing optimism that strict enforcement would restore pedestrian access and ease long-standing traffic issues.
