Tungipara (Gopalganj) Correspondent
Illegal sand extraction using dredgers in Jowaria village of Gopalpur Union in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj has sparked serious concern among local residents.
Allegations have surfaced that two Union Parishad (UP) members from Kushli and Gopalpur Unions—Billal Hossain and Shishir—are operating dredgers in agricultural lands day and night, defying government restrictions.
Locals claim that this illegal activity is taking place over approximately 20 bighas of land, resulting in decreased soil fertility and posing risks to homes and infrastructure. In an interview, Billal Hossain said, "I'm extracting sand from my own land with my own money—there shouldn't be a problem." UP member Shishir claimed he is only overseeing the operations.
The Water Development Board and the upazila administration have stated that the incident is under investigation and that necessary legal action will be taken. The Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) said, “We are aware of the matter and will take swift action.”
It is mentioned that under the Sand Quarry and Soil Management Act, 2010, extracting sand outside of approved areas or after sunset is strictly prohibited. However, such activities by influential individuals are causing irreparable harm to the environment and agriculture. Locals are strongly demanding that this illegal dredging be immediately stopped and that strict action be taken against those responsible.
