Gopalganj Municipality's water crisis: Public suffering at its peak
Golam Rabbani, Gopalganj
The 25-year-old water treatment plant of Gopalganj Municipality is losing its efficiency. As a result, against the daily demand of 60 million liters of water, the residents of the municipality are receiving only 12-15 million liters of water. This has caused extreme suffering to the residents of almost all areas of the municipality.
Regarding the water supply shortage, Municipality Administrator Biswajit Kumar Pal said that the efficiency of the treatment plant established in 2000 is decreasing day by day. It has not yet been possible to install pipelines in the new wards. He said, “A project to solve the problem has been sent to the Ministry of Local Government in the form of a DPP. Once it gets approval, the problem will be solved quickly.”
Meanwhile, citizens are expressing anger over not getting water despite paying their regular bills. Some are forced to use water from tubewells or ponds. Many are buying bottled water for drinking and cooking.
Citizens say, "If urgent action is not taken, this crisis will completely disrupt public life in the city." The victims are seeking effective action from the municipality to deal with the situation.
