A former headmaster has been beaten by a Jubo League leader for not withdrawing a case at Hatiya in Noakhali on Wednesday morning.

The former headmaster filed a written complaint at Hatiya police station naming four individuals.

Shankar Chandra Das was the headmaster of Uchkhali Government Saidiya High School. His home is in Rajer Howla village of Ward No. 7, Char Ishwar Union. The accused, Nobel Chandra Das, is the president of the Jubo League in the same ward.

According to the complaint, there has been a long-standing dispute over land between former headmaster Shankar Chandra Das and neighboring Jubo League leader Nobel Chandra Das. The opposing party tried to evict the headmaster from his purchased property. They forcibly cut crops and trees from the land. The teacher filed two lawsuits in court regarding this matter. Nobel Das was imprisoned for some time in connection with these cases.

After being released from jail, Nobel became more reckless. He started pressuring Shankar Das to withdraw the cases. Since the former teacher’s children live in India, he lives alone at home with his wife.

On the day of the incident (May 27), Nobel Das along with several thugs came to Shankar Chandra Das’s house and attacked him. They beat him until he was bloodied and left him. When his wife came out screaming, neighbors rescued him. Later, the unconscious former teacher was admitted to Hatiya Upazila Health Complex.

Meanwhile, former students of the historic Uchkhali Government High School strongly condemned the attack on their teacher. On Wednesday (June 4) morning, they held a press conference at the Hatiya Upazila Freedom Fighters Complex.

Present were former students including Abdur Rob Rashed, Sri Krishna Das, and Md. Milon Uddin among others. The speakers called the act tragic and shameful and expressed strong condemnation of the incident.

They demanded a thorough investigation to expose the culprits and exemplary punishment for the offenders.

Regarding the matter, Hatiya police inspector (investigation) Md. Khorshed Alam said that a written complaint has been received and action will be taken after investigation.
