Farmers in Hatiya working tirelessly to restore damaged paddy fields after tidal flooding

Sabbir Ibn Siddique, Hatiya (Noakhali)

Following recent abnormal tides and prolonged rainfall, large swathes of low-lying areas in Hatiya, a coastal island upazila of Noakhali, were inundated. The sudden tidal surge submerged hundreds of acres of Aman paddy fields and seedbeds, affecting a significant number of local farmers.

Though the water has partially receded, the soil remains muddy. Undeterred, the farmers have stepped into a difficult struggle to recover their fields—driven by the need to survive and ensure a harvest in the upcoming season.

In areas like Nijhum Dwip, Char Ishwar, Nolchira, Tamruddi, Sukchar, and the char lands separated from the mainland, farmers are seen wading through knee-deep mud to restore their lands. Some are repairing damaged embankments, while others are replanting seedlings to replace the damaged crops. In several places, they are digging small channels to drain out the stagnant water.

According to the Hatiya Upazila Agriculture Office, a total of 42,960 hectares of land were used for paddy cultivation this year. Among them, approximately 2,700 hectares have been partially affected by the tidal flooding. The agriculture department has already compiled a list of affected farmers and submitted a report to the relevant authorities.

Extents  of crop damage in hectares are :Aus paddy — cultivated: 27,300 | affected: 1,400, seedbeds for transplanted Aman — Cultivated: 3,950 |, affected: 480, transplanted Aman paddy, cultivated: 11,710,  affected: 820, seasonal vegetables (autumn) , cultivated: 420,  affected: 260, fruit orchards — Cultivated: 425,  affected: 12, betel leaf plantations — Cultivated: 32,  affected: 7,  chili cultivated: 12 and  affected two acres.

Md. Jasim Uddin, a farmer from Char Ishwar Union, said, the tidal surge submerged my five bighas of land. Many seedlings were damaged. I'm now replanting. If I can't finish the work in time, I may lose the entire crop season.

Shahid, a farmer from Nijhum Dwip Union, added,. many fields are still waterlogged. Without proper drainage, we can’t transplant seedlings. If the government provides quick support with seeds, fertilizer, and other inputs, we could recover some of the losses.

Hatiya Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdul Bashed Sabuj said, we  are collecting damage data from the field. Farmers re-cultivating their land are receiving advice and seed support. Our team is working in the field to ensure timely transplanting.

Local stakeholders stressed that to help farmers overcome the shock of natural disasters and harvest in time, more robust government initiatives and support are urgently needed.
