Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj
In Narayanganj, expelled BNP leader Ataur Rahman Mukul, also known as Kana Mukul, was beaten, stripped, and humiliated by individuals who accused him of being an "ally of the fascist Awami League." Mukul is a former joint convener of Narayanganj city BNP and a former chairman of Bandar Upazila Parishad.
The incident occurred around 1 PM on Sunday
in front of the Haripur Power Plant in the Madanpur area of Bandar Upazila, according to local sources.
At the time, a group of men physically assaulted him, hurled obscene slurs, tore his clothes, and left him stripped. Police arrived at the scene shortly afterward and rescued Mukul. He was then taken to a private hospital in the city with serious injuries. A video clip of the incident has already gone viral on social media.
Mukul alleged that the attack was led by Sonargaon Upazila BNP Vice-President Bazlur Rahman, also known as Don Bazlur. Mukul said, "I went to the Haripur Power Plant in Madanpur for a scheduled tender submission related to labor recruitment. Suddenly, Don Bazlur and his men attacked and humiliated me." He demanded a fair investigation and justice.
Regarding the matter, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) of the district, Tarek Al Mehdi, said, “I just heard about the incident. He is currently under medical care. We are investigating who was involved. We are also looking into whether there are any cases filed against him. If there are, we will take appropriate legal action.”
In the video footage, several individuals can be seen verbally abusing Mukul, calling him an "Awami League collaborator." His panjabi and pants are ripped off, leaving him partially unclothed. One person is seen dragging him by the torn clothing. Police eventually rescue him and take him away in an auto-rickshaw to a safe location. He was later admitted to a private hospital reportedly owned by him.
Mukul was previously also the president of Bandar Upazila BNP. In 2024, before the 12th National Parliamentary Election, the BNP expelled him from the party for allegedly participating in multiple political rallies of the then Narayanganj-5 MP, A. K. M. Selim Osman.
