Even after 9 months of Cyclone Remal : 10- km damaged road on bank of Panguchi river not repaired in Morelganj

The 10- km damaged road on the banks of the Panguchi River to Fulhata has not been repaired even after 9 months of Cyclone Remal causing the suffering of the local people.

4,000 families on the banks of the river are floating in tidal water twice a day. The locals are demanding that these roads should be repaired and permanent embankment constructed.

Local people complained that 1 km of RCC welded road adjacent to Ferighat from Morelganj town has been destroyed, which is causing problems for the movement of 1000 people of 250 families. Also, the condition of the roads around Morelganj town is very fragileSimilarly, a significant portion of the 10 km road from Morelganj town to Barikhali, Sutalri, Baharbunia, Fulhata Ghashiakhali along the riverside of 10 villages has collapsed and washed away in the river. Broken roads, potholes, and significant portions of roads washed away into rivers are causing severe hardship to the people of these areas.

Specially, students, working people and general public are constantly facing problemsAlso, several culverts, wooden bridges, cast bridges have been damaged for a long time. The authorities have not taken any initiative to repair them. The victims of these areas demanded that the broken roads and culverts be repaired to facilitate travel on a temporary basisThey also said that if we build a sustainable embankment in this 10 km danger zone, it will play an important role in the long-term sustainable development of the government.

The local chairmen said that on May 26, Cyclone Remal destroyed the 10-kilometer road from Morelganj Ferighat to Ghashiakhali in Fulhata along the river bank of their unionNo action has been taken so far for the renovation of these roads by the concerned department. Locals are demanding a quick solution to this situation.

Upazila Engineer MdAriful Islam said that the concerned department has been informed in writing about the damage of 10 km unpaved road from Ferighat to Fulhata. He also said that these roads are damaged every year due to river erosion. Until durable dams are built, no permanent solution is possible.

300 kilometers of unpaved and carpeted roads have been damaged in this upazila due to the impact of Cyclone Remal. This list has been sent to the directorate. Some roads have been repaired on an urgent basis, while the remaining roads will be renovated in phases, he said.
