DU Chhatra Dal claims ‘conspiracy’ in Shammo murder probe

DU Correspondent

The Dhaka University (DU) unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has alleged that a major conspiracy may be behind the killing of its leader SM Shahriar Alam Shammo, but it is not being properly investigated.

At a press conference held at Madhu’s Canteen on campus on Saturday (May 31), the student wing of BNP expressed grave concern over what they termed as the lack of transparency and seriousness in the ongoing investigation into the killing.

Leaders of the DU Chhatra Dal unit expressed disappointment over what they called the administration’s negligence and the police’s biased conduct, claiming that these factors have rendered the investigation process questionable.

Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahosh, president of the JCD DU unit, alleged, “On the night of 13 May, Shammo was brutally stabbed to death at the entrance of Suhrawardy Udyan. Despite the presence of police personnel at the scene, they failed to act appropriately and, according to eyewitnesses, allegedly assisted the attackers in escaping.”

According to the organisation, significant progress in the investigation only began long after the incident.

At a press briefing led by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner, information presented was described by Chhatra Dal as “vague and misleading.” While the authorities claimed the murder resulted from a petty dispute over a speaker used for playing music, medical professionals have asserted that Shammo’s death was caused by a deliberate severing of a major artery in his thigh — an act indicating premeditation.

The student organisation believes that such a calculated manner of attack suggests a larger conspiracy, which has not been explored thoroughly during the investigation. They also raised questions about the role of the university administration.

“In spite of increasing dominance of Chhatra League activists, widespread drug syndicates in halls, and deteriorating security conditions on campus, the administration has failed to take effective action,” the group stated.

Expressing strong resentment towards the Vice-Chancellor and the Proctor, Chhatra Dal said the VC’s “unprofessional attitude towards students' emotions” has further fuelled dissatisfaction.

They also condemned the spread of misinformation and smear campaigns against Shammo and his family on social media, alleging that such acts are being used to divert attention from the core issue and obstruct justice.

Chhatra Dal said the dream of a free and secure campus, as envisioned during the mass uprising of July 2024, remains unfulfilled due to administrative failure. As such, they have reiterated their demand for the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and Proctor and the establishment of a new administration under which a safe campus can be ensured.

The organisation declared that their protests would intensify until a fair investigation is conducted and justice is delivered for the killing of Shaheed Shammo, alongside their ongoing demand for enhanced campus security.
