 Cox's Bazar Correspondent

A householder was killed and his brother injured in a daring robbery at their residence in Ukhiya’s Jaliapalong union of Cox’s Bazar. The robbers reportedly looted cash and gold ornaments from the house, according to the victims’ family.

The incident took place around 8:30 PM on Monday at the hilly area of Purbo Nurardail under Ward No. 5 of Jaliapalong Union in Ukhiya upazila.

The deceased has been identified as Nurul Amin alias Babul (40), son of the late Ishaq Ahmed of the same area.
In the incident, his younger brother Mohammad Hasan (35) was also injured.

Describing the incident, Nurul Amin’s wife Asina Khatun said that in the evening, the family members, including her husband, were sitting together wrapping betel leaves collected from their own garden. As they were finishing up, she asked her husband to go to the market to buy fish. Nurul Amin, accompanied by his younger brother Mohammad Hasan, went to the local station to buy fish.

About 20-25 minutes after they left, a group of 10-12 masked robbers stormed into the house.
“At that time, the robbers were armed with locally made long guns, machetes, and knives. Entering the house, they held the family members hostage at gunpoint. At one stage, they physically assaulted us and looted the gold ornaments we were wearing as well as those kept in the house, along with Tk 2 lakh in cash from the sale of a sacrificial cow,” said the victimized housewife.

She added, “While fleeing, the robbers encountered my husband and brother-in-law on the way. As soon as they saw them, the robbers opened fire and then hacked them with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene. Relatives later rushed them to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared my husband dead.”

Accusing the robbers of attempting to abduct her teenage daughter, Asina Khatun further alleged, “They took my daughter up to a nearby canal. Later, after much pleading and begging, the robbers released her.”

Ukhiya Police Station OC Muhammad Arif Hossain said that after receiving information about the incident in the evening, a police team rushed to the spot. By then, the injured brothers had already been taken to the hospital by relatives, where one of them was declared dead and the other was undergoing treatment.

He added that police have launched an operation to identify and arrest those involved.
The deceased’s body has been kept at Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
