Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Jahidul Islam Mia is participating in consecutive mosquito extermination and cleanliness drives to curb the spread of dengue in various upazilas. After Sitakunda and Karnaphuli, he has now taken part in a special operation in HatHazari.
Along with supervising activities at the field level, he is also spraying mosquito extermination medicine himself. He is placing special emphasis on involving local administration, social organizations, and the general public in dengue prevention.
On Saturday (October 10), a simultaneous mosquito extermination and cleanliness drive was conducted in 15 identified high-risk areas of Hat Hazari municipality and 14 union councils. After a awareness rally organized by the upazila administration and municipality, the district commissioner himself applied mosquito extermination medicine using a fogging machine. During this time, larvicides were also sprayed to destroy Aedes mosquito larvae.
Earlier, on September 26, the district commissioner inaugurated a seven-day special dengue prevention program in Sitakunda. This program implemented in municipalities and unions placed special emphasis on seven high-risk areas. A total of 16 fogging machines and necessary pesticides were collected for the operation. The district commissioner himself participated in mosquito extermination and drain cleaning activities.
Later, on October 3, he took part in dengue prevention activities in Karnaphuli upazila. After an awareness rally from Sainyartek to Brijghat, he inaugurated a mosquito extermination campaign in the Charpathorghata Union Council area. On that day, special activities were conducted in 10 identified high-risk areas of the upazila.
According to district administration sources, a cleanliness campaign has been underway in the district with the slogan "Clean the City-Village, Create a Beautiful Chattogram" since July 25. On the first day of the campaign, nearly 6,200 officials and staff participated. Approximately 135 tons of waste were removed from various government offices and installations.
Subsequently, cleanliness activities have been conducted in almost 1,200 educational institutions, various water bodies, and important places in the district. This has been supplemented by a special three-month dengue prevention program initiated on September 12 under the direction of the Prime Minister.
The district administration has informed that arrangements have been made to designate beds and supply test kits for the treatment of dengue patients at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, General Hospital, and upazila-level hospitals.
In the HatHazari program, Depury Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia stated that the panic among people regarding dengue in Chattogram during September has decreased significantly in October. He claimed that the loss of life due to dengue has also decreased.
Earlier, at the Karnaphuli program, the deputy commissioner mentioned that until September, there had been 21 deaths due to dengue in Chattogram. In Sitakunda and Karnaphuli, the infection was comparatively higher. However, he noted that after conducting a special program in Sitakunda, there had been no deaths due to dengue in the following week.
Emphasizing the prevention of dengue fatalities, the district commissioner said, "We do not want to lose any of our lives like this, we do not want a light to go out like this. Because, these lights will illuminate us. One day they will take us to the world stage."
He expressed satisfaction with youth participation in the program. He called upon the media to highlight not only the negative incidents in society but also the positive initiatives.
The program in HatHazari was attended by Mohammad Sharif Uddin, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) of Chattogram, UNO and Municipal Administrator Muhammad Abdullah Al Mumin, Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land), UHFPO and various officials from different levels of the administration. Additionally, local political leaders and representatives from various social organizations participated.
