Car imports thru' Payra Port open new horizons for business expansion

businessnews24bd.com

As the country's third sea port, Payra Port is not only enhancing freight handling capabilities but also creating new horizons in Bangladesh's import-and-export trade. With modern infrastructure, secure storage facilities, expedited customs clearance, and advanced connectivity for handling imported cars, Payra Port is establishing itself as a highly promising alternative port. Situated at the mouth of the Rabnabad channel in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali, the port's strategic geographical location serves as a major hub for expanding commercial communication with the southern region and the rest of the country. Supported by modern jetties, a wide channel, advanced cargo-handling facilities, and tech-driven management, importers are increasingly finding growing opportunities to import, unload, and manage goods at Payra Port.

One of the most notable advantages of Payra Port is its dedicated infrastructure for the safe berthing, storage, and management of imported vehicles. This includes a 148-meter dedicated car Ro-Ro jetty, a 77,146-square-meter car parking yard, and a car-shed spanning approximately 2,700 square meters, with a combined parking capacity for 3,500 vehicles simultaneously. Rapid unloading from ships, secure storage, fire-fighting systems, stringent security management, and adequate parking sheds for onward transportation are critical for car imports—foundations that Payra Port has robustly established.

Utilizing modern terminals and efficient management, Payra Port enables swift clearance of imported goods. According to port data, it has already successfully handled a total of 7,583 commercial vessels—including 564 foreign-bound ships—generating approximately Tk 1,900 crore in revenue for the government, including customs. Furthermore, Payra Port has achieved the capability to unload 40,000 to 50,000 metric tons of cargo directly from a single vessel. Additionally, a 20% to 80% lower tariff advantage compared to other ports serves as a significant bonus for businesses.

Payra Port’s round-the-clock (24/7) one-stop service and tech-enabled 'Smart Customer Service' create exceptional conveniences for importers. Information flow, goods management, and office workflows are becoming increasingly transparent and dynamic through modern billing software and automation. Security and orderly management are particularly crucial for high-value imported goods like automobiles. Operating in alignment with international maritime security standards such as ISPS, Payra Port's management capabilities will further boost importer confidence.

The market for private, commercial, and diverse motor vehicles is growing at an accelerating pace in Bangladesh. These vehicles are currently imported primarily through Chattogram and Mongla ports. Because Chattogram Port is heavily congested, it often discourages importers. Consequently, channeling a portion of this massive market through Payra Port will establish a new automobile-import-centric business hub in the southern region. Surrounding the port, ancillary industries such as car storage, delivery centers, transport services, logistics, customs-related services, and other supportive businesses are expected to emerge, generating new economic activities at the local level alongside port revenues.

Significant progress has been made in the infrastructural development of Payra Port. Under the scope of the port's first terminal, developments include a 650-meter main jetty, a 325,000-square-meter backup yard, a 10,000-square-meter CFS, a 2,560-square-meter car parking shed, a 77,147-square-meter yard, a 100,000-square-foot warehouse, a 148-meter service jetty, a 6.35-km 6-lane connecting road, a 1,180-meter 4-lane connecting bridge, alongside administrative infrastructure and security enhancements. Under the long-term master plan, development activities across 19 components are scheduled, of which 12 will be implemented by the Payra Port Authority and 7 by other ministries. Completed works include land acquisition, a 5.223-km 4-lane port connecting road, internal river route dredging, a 1.18-km bridge over the Andharmanik River for the first terminal, and a 6.35-km 6-lane jetty connecting road. Combined with 20%–80% lower tariff rates than alternative ports, rapid cargo handling, 24/7 services, and future infrastructure expansion, Payra Port faces remarkable prospects in automobile imports.

In conclusion, to meet the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Payra Port is working to ensure completely technology-driven and smart port operations. Eco-friendly infrastructure and modern automation will establish this port as an international-standard 'Green Port'.
