Bangladesh will not exist, if India removed': Firhad Hakim

By Mir Afroz Zaman

Firad Hakim, an important minister of the West Bengal government and mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, has warned that Bangladesh will not exist if India is removed. He made this comment in response to reporters' questions on Friday (November 8).

The army chiefs of India and Bangladesh recently held a virtual meeting to improve bilateral relations between Dhaka-Delhi. At that time, Firad Hakim expressed a negative attitude about the current situation in Bangladesh.

Firhad Hakim said, although they should not say anything about foreign policy. But what is happening is not right. The relationship between the two countries was a friendly one.

At this time, reminding the contribution of India during the independence war of Bangladesh, he said, it should not be forgotten that the independence of Bangladesh would never have come without the help of India. India supported the Liberation War and recognized the Provisional Government of Bangladesh during the war. We have given them plenty of shelter on Indian soil. So Bangladesh cannot exist without India, it will not exist.

According to political analysts, such reckless attitude and comments are also negative in terms of international relations, trade and culture of the two countries.

At a time when the Indian government is showing a flexible diplomatic attitude, this comment of Firad Hakim, an important minister of the West Bengal government, may cause considerable political tension in the international arena, analysts believe.
