Ataullah, the leader of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), has been arrested from Narayanganj district.
Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Pratyush Kumar Majumder confirmed the development to BBC Bangla.
Ataullah was detained along with several associates by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Majumder said.
On Tuesday, police presented them before a Narayanganj court seeking their remand in a case. According to a police official, the court granted a 10-day remand.
ARSA was previously known locally as Harakah al-Yaqin.
Ataullah, also known as Abu Amar Jununi, was born in Karachi, Pakistan after his father migrated there from Rakhine. He grew up in Mecca, where he studied at a madrasa.
ARSA members in Rakhine are believed to have received modern guerrilla warfare training, and the group enjoys support and sympathy among local Rohingyas.
