Four accused have been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 5,000 each (with an additional six months of simple imprisonment in default of payment) in a case over the assault and injury of two police officers during a drug raid in Sreenagar, Munshiganj.

The verdict was delivered on Sunday at  1:30 PM by Judge Gazi Delwar Hossain of the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court. As the accused were absent during the verdict, the judge also issued arrest warrants against them.

The convicted individuals are:

Bacchu Mia (42), son of the late Dalil Uddin Akon of Bashkandi village, Shibchar upazila, Madaripur;

Zahid (24), son of Jalal Bhandari of Foinpur village, Sreenagar upazila;

Raju (30), son of Megha of Goali Matra village, Louhajang upazila;

Md. Faruk (30), son of the late Rangamia of the same village.

The verdict was confirmed by court bench assistant Md. Bulbul Ahmed.

According to the case and court sources, on the night of May 8, 2019, around 12:00 AM, police from Sreenagar police station conducted a raid near the pond of Kali Shikdar in South Paiksa village and arrested Bacchu Mia with 30 yaba tablets. As Bacchu screamed for help, the other accused attacked and seriously injured SI Nurul Islam and Constable Shahidul.

Following the incident, SI Al Amin Sarkar of Sreenagar Police Station filed a case under the Penal Code and Narcotics Control Act against Bacchu Mia and the other accused.

After reviewing testimonies from seven witnesses, the court found the four accused guilty and delivered the verdict.

State prosecutor Advocate Sultana Rozina Yasmin said, “The court found the four accused guilty under two separate sections of the Penal Code and sentenced each of them to three years of rigorous imprisonment, a fine of Tk 5,000, and in default, six more months of simple imprisonment. We are satisfied with the court’s verdict.”
