CNG auto-rickshaw driver stabbed to death over passenger sequence in Sylhet

Sylhet Correspondent

A 30-year-old CNG auto-rickshaw driver was stabbed to death allegedly by a rival driver following a dispute over passenger sequence in Kanaighat upazila of Sylhet on Tuesday morning.

The deceased was identified as Shahab Uddin, son of the late Matris Ali, hailing from Sonatanpunji village under Laxmiprasad West Union in the upazila.

According to local sources and police, a dispute broke out about a month ago between Shahab Uddin and another auto-rickshaw driver over their serial position for picking up passengers at the Suraighat stand in Kanaighat. Although a local arbitration (salish) was scheduled to resolve the conflict, tension remained between the two parties.

As a fallout of the ongoing feud, rivals attacked Shahab Uddin around 8:00 am on Tuesday in his village, leaving him critically injured with stab wounds.

Locals rescued the victim and rushed him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment around 11:00 am.

When contacted, Md Aminul Islam, OC of Kanaighat Police Station, confirmed the incident to reporters.

"The murder stems from a dispute over picking up passengers that occurred nearly a month ago. Preparations are underway to file a case in this connection. Police are conducting drives to arrest those involved," the OC said.

No suspects have been arrested so far in connection with the murder.
