Seminar on ‘Forests and Food’ held marking International Day of Forests

In observance of the International Day of Forests, the Bangladesh Botanical Society organized a seminar titled “Forests and Food” at the Department of Botany auditorium, University of Dhaka on Thursday. 

Prof Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka, attended the event as the chief guest.

The seminar was presided over by Professor Dr. Md. Azizur Rahman, President of the Bangladesh Botanical Society. Mukid Majumder Babu, Chairman of the Nature & Life Foundation, joined as special guest and delivered remarks highlighting the interdependence of forests and sustainable food systems.

Professor Dr. Asfaq Ahmed of the Department of Botany presented the keynote paper.

The discussion session featured insights from Prof Dr. Mihir Lal Saha, Chair of the Department of Botany, and Professor Dr. Mohammad Jasim Uddin, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Botanical Society. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Professor Dr. Mohammad Almozzaddedy Alfehsani, Treasurer of the Society.

In his speech, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan underscored the importance of forest and environmental conservation in the context of climate resilience and sustainable living.

“Environmental preservation must be part of our everyday lives. Each of us can contribute in our own capacity. These efforts must be nurtured from the individual level and expanded to the social and national spheres,” he said.

Dr. Khan also urged all stakeholders to work collectively toward building a more livable and ecologically balanced future for the coming generations.
