A total of six people, including prime suspect Mehran, have been arrested until Wednesday evening in connection with the killing of Zahidul Islam Parvez, a student of Prime Asia University in Dhaka.

Zahidul Islam Parvez, 23, was a student of the 223 batch in the Textile Engineering department at Primeasia University and a resident of Mymensingh. He was stabbed with a sharp weapon while trying to flee towards the university’s main gate on April 19 afternoon and later he was declared dead when he was rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital.

Contacted on Wednesday evening, Banani Police Station Officer In-charge (OC) Rasell Sarwar said so far six suspects, including prime accused Mehran, have been arrested till Wednesday evening in connection with the killing.

Among them, Banani thana police arrested four suspects, while remaining two others by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), the OC added.

Meanwhile, Additional SP (Media) of Rab-13 Biplob Kumar Gwushami told media that a team of the Rab-13 arrested  Mehran Islam, the prime accused in the murder case, from a relative’s house in Bhabanipur village under Ramchandrapur Union of Gaibandha Sadar upazila  at around 4:35 PM on Wednesday. Later, he was sent back to Dhaka.

Besides, a team of Banani police station  arrested another accused in the case named Mahathir Hasan (20), the third accused named in the FIR. He was arrested on Wednesday morning from a residence in Azad Tower, Road No. 01, Lane-04, Block-L, under Halishahar Police Station in Chattogram with assistance from local police.

Earlier, on April 20 midnight, Banani police arrested three suspects—Md Al Kamal Sheikh alias Kamal (19), Alvi Hossain Zunaid (19), and Al Amin Sani (19)—during a raid in the Mohakhali Wireless Gate area of Dhaka city in connection with the murder case.

Later on April 21 night, another accused named Hridoy Miazi (23) was arrested by RAB in a drive in Monairkandi village under Balarampur Union of Titas upazila in Cumilla. He is a joint secretary of the anti-discrimination student movement’s Banani thana unit.

The murder incident followed a complaint against Zahidul Islam Parvez for harassing two female students of the same University on April 19 afternoon. An argument broke out between students of the two department of the university  and the university authorities arranged a meeting to resolve the matter. Zahidul Islam Parvez was a student of the 223 batch in Textile Engineering department of the university.

Later on April 19 late night, the Parvez’s cousin Humayun Kabir filed a murder case with Banani Police Station naming eight individuals, including both students of Prime Asia University and outsiders.

The accused are Mehran Islam, Abu Zohor Giffari Pias, Mahathir Hasan, Sobhan Niaz Tushar, Hridoy Miazi, Rifat, Ali, and Fahim. Another 25 to 30 unidentified individuals were also mentioned in the case.

According to Banani police station Inspector (Operation) and also investigation officer of the case Moien Uddin,  they reviewed CCTV footage of the crime scene after the incident and conducted a drive on April 21 around 12:15 AM in the Mohakhali Wireless Gate area, leading to the earlier arrests of Kamal, Zunaid, and Sani.
