Mother Hilsa protection ban : Mannan, Nur Nabi, others in Halishahar in debt burden before goibg into sea
Moinuddin Moni, Chattogram
In order to ensure the safe reproduction of mother Hilsa and increase Hilsa production , the fishing , transportation , storage , marketing , buying , selling and exchanging of Hilsa is completely prohibited from October 8 to October 29 , 2026 ( 22 days ) .
Despite mortgaging their land , Abdul Mannan , a fisherman from North Halishahar , and his nephew Nur Nabi, along with numerous fishermen from Baruni Ghata and Rani Rashmoni Ghat in North Halishahar , were left empty -handed and faced extreme disaster due to the ban on fishing . Abdul Mannan, a fisherman from North Halishahar , and his nephew Nur Nabi , along with numerous fishermen from this area , had bet their last fortune in the hope of turning their fortunes around by catching fish . They had raised a large sum of capital by mortgaging their land and borrowing from relatives and friends ahead of the Hilsa season . With that capital , they rented a big boat and hired skilled fishermen from Bhola on a contract basis in the hope of catching more fish .
After completing all the preparations , they were at the last moment to go to sea , when the government ban came . Even before the ban , the expected hilsa was not available in the sea , due to which many could not afford the oil costs . Now, with the income completely stopped for 22 consecutive days , they are suffering from extreme frustration over the repayment of installments and the return of the Dadan money.
With no alternative source of income , it has become difficult for the fishermen's families to meet their daily food and daily expenses . The fishermen complain that the VGF rice assistance provided by the government is often not sufficient or does not arrive on time .
Currently, fishing trawlers and boats are anchored at Baruni Ghat . Fishermen are sitting on the ghat during this idle time, weaving their old nets, repairing the engines of the trawlers and painting the boats. Driven by severe poverty , some fishermen from Baruni Ghat and its neighboring Anandabazar or Dhumpara coast are trying to go to sea at night or early in the morning , eluding the eyes of the administration , as a result of which many are being arrested and fined in regular raids .
These fishermen were not aware of the sudden 22 - day ban imposed by the government to protect the mother hilsa . And due to this ignorance and government ban , their lives have suddenly descended into utter darkness .
Far from casting nets in the sea , we are now having to count huge losses every day by keeping the boat tied up at the wharf . On the one hand, we have to count the boat rent every day even if we don't go out to sea ; on the other hand , we have to pay the daily wages and food to the fishermen brought in from Bhola on a contract basis on time .
Their income has completely stopped , while the burden of daily expenses has become like a mountain on their shoulders . Abdul Mannan and Sagar are now desperate to meet these huge daily expenses , in addition to worrying about paying off loans and mortgages . This sudden government ban has brought an extreme humanitarian and economic disaster to the lives of these two fishermen families from North Halishahar .
