Maharashtra CM calls Nagpur violence 'well-planned attack', Opposition blames govt
International Desk
A political showdown erupted over the Nagpur clashes, which left over 30 people injured, as Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis claimed the violence was premeditated, while the Opposition accused the government of failing to maintain order.
Former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that the double-engine government in Maharashtra failed and they should resign.
A curfew has been imposed in several areas of Nagpur after violence broke out on Monday evening over a call to move the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb out of Maharashtra.
Over 60 rioters were taken into custody, and about 30 vehicles were set on fire after a massive clash between two groups in the Mahal area of the city.
Speaking in the Assembly on Nagpur violence, Fadnavis said, "In Nagpur, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal held protests. Rumours were spread that things containing religious content were burnt....It looks like a well-planned attack. No one has permission to take law and order into their hands."
"Attacks on police will not be tolerated, strict action will be taken," he assured.
Opposition Blames Government
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray pointed fingers at the Mahayuti government, comprising of the BJP, Eknath Shine-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar's NCP.
When asked about the violence in Nagpur, Uddhav Thackeray said, "I am not the Chief Minister, nor am I the Home Minister. Ask the Chief Minister (Devendra Fadnavis) who is behind this. Because the RSS headquarters is there (Nagpur). There is a double-engine government here (in Maharashtra). If the double-engine government has failed, then they should resign."
